Hackers stole $1 million from US government

Using government workers details, which he also obtained illegally, the hacker ordered office supplies (mainly toner cartridges) to be delivered to his associate’s address, for resell on the black market in Nigeria.
Jeff Goldman, NJ Advance Media reported for NJ.com on the $1 million (€0.91 million) scam which went on for about six months in 2013.
Reportedly the hacker targeted US government workers and obtained personal data like user names and passwords through phishing emails. Using these details, he then ordered toner cartridges from government trusted suppliers to be delivered to an associate’s address. Here, the cartridges were repacked and sent to Nigeria to be resold on the black market.
According to the article on NJ.com, US Attorney’s Office for New Jersey said that Olumide J. Ogunremi, who also went by the name of “Tony Williams”, could now face up to 20 years imprisonment if he is convicted of a single count of wire fraud.
Initially, Ogunremi fled to Canada, NJ.com said, but was later extradited to the US and charged and held in New Jersey without bail. One of his associates already pleaded earlier and is now serving a three-year sentence in prison.
