UK introduces plastic tax
April 1, 2022
Effective today the UK is implementing a tax of £200 (€237/$262) per ton for any plastic made of less than 30% recycled materials.
The tax was first announced in July 2021 and take effect from the 1st of April. The new tax is designed to curb the production of single-use plastics.
Manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging must pay £200 (€237/$262) per ton for any plastic made of less than 30% recycled materials.
This is a new tax that will apply to an estimated 20,000 manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging who manufacture in, or import into the UK, that does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic. Plastic packaging is packaging that is predominantly plastic by weight.
The tax will not apply to any plastic packaging that contains at least 30% recycled plastic, or any packaging which is not predominantly plastic by weight.
Imported plastic packaging will be liable to the tax, whether the packaging is unfilled or filled.
The UK government projects the tax measure could save 200,000 tons of carbon emissions in 2022 to 2023, based on current carbon factors and boost the demand for recycled materials by 40%.
