Consuprint wins Balearics contract

June 8, 2021

Barcelona-based Consuprint SL has been awarded a contract by the Balearics government as part of their move towards a more sustainable and circular business model.

In February 2020, as part of their measures to deal with waste and plastic pollution the Balearic Islands Government (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza) included a ban on non-reusable and non-rechargeable versions of printer and photocopier cartridges and toners that took effect from the 1st January 2021. The News Team has the story here.

Consuprint has been awarded with a contract to assess the impact reduction in the Balearics, as the islands move towards a more sustainable and circular business model. Javier Martinez, CEO of Consuprint SL said “The assessment is fully brand independent and technology neutral, focusing on reduction and prevention a longer life and “Value retention Processes”

The recently introduced waste laws forbids “single use printer cartridges” and, according to Martinez, the Balearic Environmental Authorities “want to become the “first circular printing community “to control the waste flows and prolong printers and cartridges longevity and (re) usability, by applying “value retention processes“ that value repair, reduce and reuse and place recycling just as the least preferred option.”

Commenting further, Martinez added: “Through understanding the gap between the end of administrative contract use when compared with technical end of life, and the application of repair, recondition and remanufacturing techniques the impact reductions can, on average, range from 79% to 99% in CO2 emissions and from 80% to 98% in natural resources and economic savings from 40% to 65% while generating green jobs (Source resource panel UNEP).

This is a pioneer action that could be a “flagship example” on how to reduce impacts in the electronic waste sectors that accounts for 70% of global waste toxicity and the fastest growing waste stream.”

The Balearic Islands are a popular Mediterranean tourist destination and faces the tourist pressures as more and more people want to live in the islands and space is scarce. The welcome economy that tourism brings also presents high levels of concern on the corresponding environmental issues, which the Balearic Islands Government are implementing radical measures to deal with waste and plastic pollution and reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in the Mediterranean Sea and boost the amount of reuse and recycling among their citizens and tourists.
