Workers poisoned using chloroform in assembling cartridge components?

iStock_000000314039MediumAccording to reports received by The Recycler from people familiar with the issue, several workers at a Zhuhai factory were poisoned recently while using chloroform in the production and assembly of toner hoppers used in the manufacture of new, non-OEM laser printer cartridges.

The Recycler understands that the factory is a sub contractor of a major manufacturer of new, non OEM cartridges in Zhuhai and that the staff and managers were unaware of the hazards of using chloroform in a production environment.

At a recent meeting of local factories ZhuHai government officials were reported as stating “A cartridge plastic factory used chloroform to glue plastic parts, the windows and doors in the workshop were closed, so a lot of workers were poisoned.” The officials said that the factories should pay attention to the glues used in the factory and the factories will be checked. The Recycler understands that factory inspections have now begun in the ZhuHai area.

While the officials did not name the factory in question, people familiar with the story said the factory in question was a sub-contractor of a major cartridge maker and the chloroform was being used in the ultrasonic welding of toner hoppers.

The Recycler understands that the meeting was told that the accident was very bad for the consumables industry in ZhuHai, and the that city considered withdrawing support for the industry.

Chloroform is used as solvent, degreasing agent or chemical intermediate in industries like adhesives, pesticides, fats or  oils.  In the manufacture of vinyl chloride/polyvinyl chloride (VC/PVC, IUPAC name: Polychloroethene) products and other chlorinated bulk chemicals, chloroform is a by-product. Similarly, chloroform is an important building block for fluorinated polymers and copolymers.

Chloroform is very noxious to work with and can cause dizziness and sickness. Prolonged exposure can affect the liver and make you unconscious. Uncontrolled exposure can kill you and one of the reasons it’s no longer used as an anaesthetic today is that people overcome by the effects of chloroform don’t always wake up.

The use of Chloroform is heavily regulated in Europe and North America and it is also a suspected carcinogen.
