Guy and Vincenza Ciampa, of Cartridge Depot in Bedford, have donated to a charity that helped them after their new-born son suffered complications.

Bedfordshire News reported on the Ciampas, who run the store in Bedford and whose son Dario Luigi Ciampa was born last May, with a “few complications”. Guy Ciampa told the news source that when Dario was born, his wife “grew concerned as she watched other mums on the ward with their babies. They were all feeding regularly, being changed regularly…but this wasn’t the case with Dario. In fact, he had barely fed and hadn’t filled his nappy at all.

“The next morning, the midwife noticed a dimple on the base of his back and immediately called for a paediatric consultant who told us Dario’s bowel hadn’t fully formed and therefore his bottom had no opening”. Dario was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where The Sick Children’s Trust “came into help the family by offering them free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation” during the time Dario was being treated.

The trust runs 10 of the ‘Home from Home’ sites around the UK, supporting 4,000 families with free accommodation last year, and as well as bedrooms, each of the homes has communal bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms. After two operations, Dario is “doing very well”, and the Ciampas have “expressed their thanks to the brilliant care” he and they received, with a donation of a printer and free cartridges from the company and a pledge to help with fundraising.

Guy Ciampa added: “We felt it only right to repay The Sick Children’s Trust in some way – what we have donated to them will never be enough to say thank you, as what it offered us was more than just a room to stay in, it was the comforting welcome and feeling of home. The team kept us calm, which we’re sure passed on to our son, which led him to have such a great recovery. It was one less thing to worry about during a difficult time.

“I was able to be close to my family and not worry about travelling and leaving them. I think we all take many charities for granted, but when you actually use a charity like we did you realise just how important they are. I felt it so important to spread this news about The Sick Children’s Trust and what a great job Sandra and her team do at Acorn House in Cambridge. The Sick Children’s Trust makes a huge difference to parents, children and babies going through the most difficult times in their lives, so we are doing all we can to support the charity where possible.”

The charity is hosting a Big Chocolate Tea fundraising event at the end of April, which both Guy and Vincenza will be attending, and which you can find out more about here.

Sandra Peckham, Manager of Acorn House, where the family stayed, commented: “We’d like to thank Dario’s family so very much for their wonderful donation, support and kind words. When a child is taken to hospital to receive critical treatment, life for the whole family is thrown into turmoil. Acorn House means families like Guy and Vincenza can stay together in free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation, just minutes from their sick child’s bedside – easing some of the worries at an incredibly difficult time.”
