Toshiba has unveiled what it claims to be the world’s first multifunction product that incorporates the use of erasable toner, promoting a “new era of corporate environmental sensibility”.
The OEM’s new e-STUDIO306LP/RD30 MFP uses a “unique” toner that can be erased should users wish to reuse paper that has previously been printed on, with paper able to be reused up to five times; reducing paper usage and carbon emissions by up to 57 percent.
The toner is erased through the application of heat using the e-STUDIO RD30 unit, which is also able to scan a document to a network file location or USB drive before it is erased should the user want to save what has been printed on it. Once a document has been erased, the paper is returned to the unit’s upper drawer if it is suitable for reuse, while paper that has not been able to be fully erased is sent to the bottom drawer to be recycled.
The device also integrates bio-based plastics, producing 20 percent less CO2 emissions during production compared to traditional petroleum-based versions; while at the same time features “impressive” warm-up and first-copy-out times, colour scanning and a print speed of 30 pages per minute.
In terms of security, the device includes Toshiba’s Self Encrypting Drive (SED) with Automatic Data Invalidation (ADI), rendering the drive’s data useless if removed. It also features the company’s IPSec enabler, which encrypts information sent to and from a device as well as a data overwrite capability.
Commenting on the device’s launch, Andy Slawetsky, President of Industry Analysts, Inc., said: “Having incorporated erasable toner allowing output to be reused, Toshiba’s e-STUDIO306LP/RD30 is the first multifunction product available on the market with this dynamic capability […] Given this fact, it is a potential ground-breaking device; particularly for customers seeking to do their part to minimize environmental impact.”
The e-STUDIO306LP/RD30 is available now, priced at just over $10,000 (€7,671).
