November 16, 2012 Patented technology touted as eliminating risk of infringing OPC drum patents held by Canon. Components specialist Static Purported to be the result of “years of research, development and investment”, Static Control were awarded the US patents 7,813,676 B2 and 8,073,364 B2 for OPC drums in October 2010 and December 2011 respectively, with the designs eliminating the risk of infringing Canon’s patent that led the OEM to sue over 30 aftermarket companies in January 2012. The components specialist cites estimates that as much as 70 percent of all remanufactured laser cartridges using OPC drums with gears feature a twist design that is said to infringe Canon’s patents. Static Control states that its OPC drum gears “do not slant or twist, and they have 90 degrees angles”. CEO Ed Swartz commented: “After an investment of thousands of legal and engineering hours and many millions of dollars in plastic injection moulding equipment, additional personnel and time devoted to system testing, we now have fully functional gear solutions that eliminate the risk of infringing Canon’s patents.” Categories :
