As a home consumer I am not too fussed about the merger, but from a business perspective, if the merger goes ahead it will take a significant amount of competition out of the market, and we have seen in the past that Staples sold their soul to HP once. Who’s to say they won’t do it again to the detriment of customers.
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know that the office products/stationery channel is struggling to adapt to a new dynamic, and this is the real challenge for both companies. Get your business model right for the 21st century: don’t just become bigger, poorly-functioning businesses.
