September 29, 2011 More than 17.5 million gadgets are thrown out – one for every three UK Research from network provider O2 has revealed the UK loses out on an estimated £762 million ($1,194 million/€875 million) each year by not recycling used consumer electronics, including mobile phones, MP3 players and digital cameras. Despite each gadget earning an estimated £85 ($133/€97), only 16 percent of consumers do so. Over 17.5 million gadgets are thrown away each year. The reluctance can be explained by various reasons, with 37 percent of people unaware that the services exist, 27 percent stated recycling was not worth it and 11 percent were not motivated to do so. London stands firmly at the top of the list, throwing away an estimated £437 million; more than twice that of Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds. Chris Gamlin, O2 Recycle, commented: “Millions of people are missing out on huge sums of money due to their recycling reluctance. O2 Recycle offers recycling of a range of gadgets and those recycling mobile phones can also take advantage of its price match guarantee which ensures consumers get the best price possible.” Categories :
