Hispanic Business.com reports that patent number 8488136, relating to “a printing system and method, in which file data described in Page-Description Language (PDL) is directly printed, and a recording medium” has been assigned to Kyocera Document Solutions Inc.
The printing system and method involves the development of printers that are “capable of directly printing a PDF file sent from PC to a printer without being converted into printed data”; with the article noting that “with the recent development of electrophotographic page printers”, there has been an increasing amount of PDL for printer drivers to convert into print data, for example PDF files, Acrobat files and GDI (Graphics Device Interface) files.
This works by the PC sending a document file stored in a hard disk to a printer via a network. Before doing so, the file is usually converted into print data by a printer driver installed on a PC so that it can be interpreted by the printer.
However, with large PDF files now commonly found on the internet, “the conversion itself will take much time, complicate processing of such print data, and result in such an increased size of the print data that it will take increased time for transfer”. It is for this reason that Kyocera has proposed a printer able to print such files directly from a PC to a printer without the need for conversion.
