The company, in a press release, stated that it will end the 2016 financial year “with a high level of sales and a very profitable result compared with the rest of the sector”, as “for the second time in a row” its sales are “set to exceed” €640 million ($682 million) and to “be comparable” with the previous year. It is also set to reach €60 million ($63 million) in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBIDTA), which is “a marked improvement” on last year and “another excellent result”.

Its events attracted over 3.5 million visitors, while its activities outside Germany “recorded dynamic growth”, with new records set across 87 events consisting of over 49,000 exhibitors and 1.9 million visitors. This “international component” stretched to the Frankfurt exhibition grounds, where “three-quarters of all exhibitors and more than half of trade buyers at the company’s events” were from outside Germany.

Additionally, at the site in Frankfurt, “capacity utilisation […] was healthy thanks to a high number of guest events”, including 27 events and 160 congresses and conferences, while construction of Hall 12 “is on schedule and on budget”. “Various sections of the construction” are already complete alongside a “new, elegantly designed entrance portal for Hall 8” and a new section of moving walkway between Hall 8 and the Torhaus.

Hall 12, the company’s Uwe Behm noted, has see the company invest around €250 million ($266 million), which “constitutes a significant financial burden for our company”, while 10 new events are planned to be held by 2018.

Wolfgang Marzin, President and CEO of Messe Frankfurt, commented: “Messe Frankfurt is the world’s highest grossing organiser with its own exhibition grounds. This means that we have established an excellent basis and can continue to invest in the infrastructure at our Frankfurt base, in our brands and in digital processes.”

“Our key growth areas are in good health and so are the factors that drive this growth – and we are tapping into new market share, in some cases by joining forces with other market players. Our broad international base makes us less susceptible to the influence of factors from individual regions. Our trade fairs are neutral communication and trading platforms where we cultivate longstanding relationships with our customers and partners.

“We will continue to invest in line with our customers’ expectations and have the necessary capital to fulfil the goals of Messe Frankfurt, both now and in the future. For financial year 2017, we have our sights set on surpassing the €650 million ($693 million) sales mark.”

Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt, added: “We are setting new records with our event portfolio. In 2016, a total of 138 trade fairs and exhibitions were held worldwide under the Messe Frankfurt umbrella, featuring some 92,300 exhibitors – more than ever before. We created a strategic framework and are using our sector expertise to expand the global trade fair map with new events, for example in Vietnam and Ethiopia.”
