Memjet announced that it was forming a partnership with Kao Corporation and producing a range of pigment-based inks compatible with its DuraLink inkjet printing platform. DuraLink is a new printing platform which “combines long-life printheads, pigment ink and flexible modules to give OEM partners a fast, easy way to develop solutions for high-volume commercial, packaging and industrial printing markets.”
The collaboration between the two companies fuses Memjet’s ink formulation and inkjet expertise with Kao’s experience in encapsulated pigment dispersion technology to produce highly stable pigment-based inks that guarantee superior durability and print quality across a variety of media.
The creation of the inks was a painstaking process spanning five years and there were numerous challenges involved, as these specialised inks must have water fastness and resistance to light fade, have a fast dry time, competitive gamut and image quality, high reliability and long life, as well as being compatible with a range of media. In addition they must be within the low-cost and small drop-volume of Memjet’s thermal inkjet printhead.
To achieve this delicate balance, the companies marshalled their collective knowledge and expertise to custom-design the “highly stable, pigmented ink for use on plain, treated and inkjet-coated media.”
Speaking of their alliance, Kim Champion, the vice president of ink and materials at Memjet, stated that, “By leveraging Memjet’s ink and printhead expertise with Kao’s in-depth knowledge of dispersion technology and ink formulation, we were able to create a high-performing and reliable ink for DuraLink. In my experience, Memjet’s partnership with Kao has been one of the most collaborative and productive, and I look forward to continuing the alliance, which will no doubt lead to future technology advancements in ink for Memjet printheads.”
