Lyra: recession still affecting mono laser market

Lyra: recession still affecting mono laser market

September 21, 2011

The first report, Worldwide Forecast for Low-End A3 Monochrome Laser MFPs, 2008-2015, found that low-end A3 monochrome laser MFP shipments fell again in 2010 after a decline in 2009, noting that the continued downward trend is due to a number of factors, not least global unemployment as a result of the global recession.

Medium and large sized businesses have not been employing as many staff, which, according to Lyra, “has reduced the need for new personal and departmental MFPs”, which in turn has “created a surplus of MFPs” in the market.

To add to this, small businesses are cutting back on hardware purchases, and faster-speed machines, which tend to be colour MFPs, as well as MPS programmes, are costing the monochrome laser market a large proportion of shipments.

The second, Worldwide Forecast for Segment 1-4 A4 Monochrome Laser MFPs, 2008-2015, saw a rise in 2010 of sales, with over five million units sold, an increase of 20 percent from 2009 figures. However, this belies the prediction that the sector will see another decline between 2013 and 2015, with the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions increasing their share.

The final report, Impact of the Recession on High-End Monochrome Laser MFPs: Worldwide Forecast, 2008-2015, noted that the recession’s effect on credit, which caused takeup of the devices to fall sharply, with shipments sinking by eight percent between 2009 and 2010, and expected to decrease through 2015. Also cited was a move towards electronic delivery of documents.

Larry Jamieson, Director of Lyra’s Hard Copy Industry Advisory Service, said: “Changes in business practices and user printing habits as a result of greater use of mobile devices and electronic documents, managed print engagements, and a shift to colour MFPs for all-around office printing will have a lasting impact on the overall monochrome laser MFP market.”

The three reports can be purchased for $950 each from Lyra.
