March 14, 2016
The OEM has sent out emails to customers of the rewards scheme, which will end on 31 March.
The scheme allows customers to gain rewards for returning used toner cartridges to the OEM, but in an email sent to a reader of The Recycler, Lexmark stated that “we’re writing to let you know that our current Toner Rewards program ends on 31 March 2016. You have still time to earn points for free cartridges and redeem [them] before the programme expires”.
In turn, it stated: “So you can refill your toner and get as many bonuses as possible: with each cartridge return received before March 31 2016, you can earn even more points for a free toner cartridge. You have until 30 June 2016 to redeem the accumulated points. After 30 June 2016, the Toner Rewards programme is completed.”
At this point, any remaining points will be cancelled, and the OEM referred users to a question-and-answer page as well as email addresses. The impetus for the cancellation appears to be the prominence of LCCP – the Lexmark Cartridge Collection Programme – which Lexmark added will allow it to continue to “reuse or recycle” cartridges “with maximum environmental benefit”.
The rewards programme offered members the ability to receive “free high yield toner cartridges (one for every 10 returned to Lexmark)”, free “replacement imaging kits for your printer” and “free shipping on all rewards”, with its site stating that taking part can “extend the life of your Lexmark C540/?X540/?CS310/?CS410/?CS510/?CX310/?CX410/?CX510 series colour laser printers. You’ll save on printing costs while helping the environment. It’s easy to join and participate”.
