Lexmark launches new MFPs, cartridge recycling initiative

Lexmark launches new MFPs, cartridge recycling initiative

September 21, 2011

The latest devices to be released by Lexmark in South Africa, the X548de and X548dte, are said to feature productivity solutions for businesses, whilst the recycled pen initiative is making use of collected used inkjet cartridges.

The two colour laser MFPs feature a colour touch screen, pre-loaded printing applications, and other functions common to MFPs including increased security. The X548dte meanwhile features a hard disk and duo drawer for increased printing capabilities.

The printers are included in the Lexmark Rewards program, which rewards customers with free Lexmark toner and imaging kits for sending back empty cartridges. One use for these empties is creating new products, and the OEM’s work with Close the Loop to collect cartridges has yielded the recycled pen, made of inkjet cartridges.

The pen, which is said to contain 94 percent recycled products, first appeared in 2010, and the newest version is said to be more in line with the American Sharpie pens. The first shipment of pens was sent last month, and will be given to customers as well as sold in other nations.

“The introduction of the X548 smart MFPs strengthens Lexmark’s position in a strategic growth area for our company – workgroup colour laser devices,” said Marty Canning, Lexmark executive vice-president and president of Imaging Solutions and Services.

“We are committed to driving innovative, disruptive A4 technology with smart devices, customisable with industry-leading software and tailored solutions, to make our business customers more productive.”

John Gagel, sustainability manager at Lexmark, said: “It’s a completely new design that’s more functional. The ink flow is better, and the felt tip is better than the classic roller-ball design that we had first.”
