Kyocera’s initiatives validated by SBTi

July 10, 2019

The company’s target to reduce 30 percent greenhouse gas by 2030 has been officially validated by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Kyocera explained that this recognises the company’s commitment to sustainability and environment protection, a core principle of its Environmental Charter originally set down over 25 years ago.

The SBTi is comprised of global organisations that encourage environmental action through science-based target setting, including the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wide Fund for Nature. It was established in 2015 to support the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to “well below” 2°C above pre-industrial levels and provides a framework for businesses to set and commit to meaningful targets for emissions reduction.

While over 550 businesses have joined the initiative, just over 200 worldwide have had their targets validated by the SBTi. Kyocera explained that this places the company in an elite group of organisations that have undertaken the highest level of commitment to sustainable business practices and protecting the environment.

As part of its longstanding program to reduce GHG emissions, Kyocera said it is prioritising sustainable manufacturing and recycling processes that comply with the ISO 9001 standard, which sets out the requirements for a quality management system that helps businesses to become more efficient. Kyocera is also targeting a 10x increase in renewable energy adoption by 2030, compared to 2013 levels, through the implementation of new environmental and renewable energy measure, including the installation of off-site renewable energy generating systems, which are capable of supplying power for production.

Rod Tonna-Barthet, Kyocera Group UK’s CEO, commented: “We are proud to have our targets for reducing our GHG emissions endorsed by the SBT initiative. This recognition from a partnership of such prestigious organisations is a really important third-party validation of the steps we’re taking to ensure Kyocera is one of the world’s most sustainable organisations. As we continue to enhance our sustainability, this endorsement will encourage our staff and leadership teams to keep making improvements to our business and strengthen our focus on carbon emission reduction.

“With every product and service that we provide, we focus both on how we can best serve our customers and how we can ensure that we make minimal impact on the environment. Whether it’s manufacturing components that require fewer raw materials or last longer, so need to be replaced less often, or developing products that conserve energy and minimise waste, we are fully committed to reducing our environmental footprint and helping to build a greener, more sustainable world.”
