ITP opens new warehouse

ITP’s new warehouse in Reading

The empties collector and broker’s new warehouse is based at its Reading location in the UK.

The new warehouse, according to Commercial Director Jason Doran, was decided upon after the company “reviewed the business – we decided to consolidate operations in Reading through a larger, second warehouse here”. The lease on the company’s other UK warehouse, in Thetford is due to expire later this year. ITP UK was already using a second temporary storage facility in Reading, so with the Thetford lease up for renewal, Doran noted that “it was the ideal time to close and consolidate the warehouse operation into one location”.

The move will help simplify logistics and stock movements as well as reduce associated time and costs of moving stock. The Takeback sales and customer service team will be relocated to new smaller offices in Thetford, and remain a “very important and integral part of the ITP business”, Doran added. He also stated that “the Takeback sales team have a very strong relationship and rapport with their customer base, and it was important to maintain the continuity for these customers and the business”.

The move will see relocation packages and alternative employment offered to the Takeback warehouse staff, while the Thetford warehouse will close at the end of April, and by that time “all stock from there should be relocated to Reading with minimum disruption for our Takeback customers”.

The new site features both “space and location advantages, including narrow aisles with new forklift machines designed for the space. We’ve also got new racking, and that plus the narrow aisles means more storage capacity and maximising the space we have. By resizing the collections boxes, for example, by just a small amount, we were able to increase our storage capacity in the new warehouse by 30 percent!”

Doran noted that there are “so many advantages to being based in one location – we can increase our visibility when it comes to buying and selling stock, there will be fewer logistical problems, and UK stock will be processed and stored in one location”. It will also mean “better customer service, and we feel strongly that it’s the right decision for the business and provides us with room for further expansion in the future”.

He added that the new move reflects ITP’s objective of “becoming more efficient and productive in our operations and our people”. ITP has experienced “years of under-investment” in IT and other processes that need to be addressed. An enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is currently being developed, which when combined with the consolidation “will have a major impact on the business and our customer service levels”. Doran pointed out that the “enterprise-wide tool” would help streamline and improve the entire business process from collecting and sorting, to storing and shipping. We are entering a very exciting period for ITP”.

The warehouse move is not the only change, as ITP’s logo is also changing, with the new logo aligning with those of Restore and Harrow Green, which acquired ITP last year. The goose on the new logo is a “symbol of migration, movement and efficiency”, with many of the Restore businesses focusing on recycling, moving products or indeed entire businesses. ITP hopes to “take full advantage of the cross-selling opportunities” provided by the Restore and Harrow Green customers operating in similar market spaces.
