HP has been presented with a Records and Information Management Awareness (RIMA) award in recognition of its efforts to tackle counterfeit products in Africa, reports The Guardian Nigeria.
The OEM’s mobile authentication tool enables customers to identify non-genuine HP products using a unique code found on the security labels of HP products, which can either be scanned via a QR code reader downloaded onto the customer’s smartphone or entered onto HP’s Mobile Authentication website.
The RIMA award was in recognition of the technology, with the article claiming that during 2012, 1.3 million counterfeit items were confiscated in the Middle East, Mediterranean and Africa regions with help from HP. It also claims that there is a “clear need” for HP’s technology in the region, with research finding that 50 percent of respondents in Nigeria had been offered or had bought counterfeit cartridges in 2012, and that 64 percent of businesses in the country do not conduct any research prior to buying cartridges.
Rita Amuchienwa, Supplies Country Manager, Printing and Personal Systems, English West Africa commented: “The HP Anti-counterfeiting Programme works hard to protect partners and customers by making it difficult to produce, distribute and sell counterfeits. This recent innovation in labels and packaging is an example of HP using technology to stay one step ahead of fraudsters, especially in Nigeria where counterfeiting is a serious issue.
“We are honoured that this RIMA award recognises our efforts in this area and celebrates the innovation and authenticity which is integral to our brand and products.”
RIMA President Oyewole Oyedokun said: “The Records and Information Management Awareness Foundation created the awards to promote the proper management and security of records and information. We are delighted to name HP winner of the Mobile Information Management category for its vision in creating a technology which uses information and software to protect businesses from illegal counterfeiting.”
