DeCapria, whose husband is the fire department chief, holds the position of secretary-treasurer at the volunteer fire department in New York state, but over the past five years has reportedly spent over $500,000 on goods for the department, before pocketing the money back from the credit card charges and cheques written to herself.
On behalf of the 40 member volunteer department, DeCapria bought $20,000 worth of office supplies, including $3,000 worth of pens and pencils, and $12,000 on inkjet cartridges.
A state comptroller audit released on Wednesday made the accusations against DeCapria. NYS Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli added that DeCapria had been accused of also purchasing “14 printers, 11 computers…a washer-dryer, refrigerator-freezer, digital cameras, GPS systems, [and] an electronic book reader.”
WNYT.com reported that DeCapria’s husband was also written cheques, though he has told investigators he knew nothing, and is not expected to be charged. DeCapria’s position and trust from the department meant nobody else oversaw the spend, and it went unnoticed until the audit.
DeCapria has been charged with grand larceny, and of stealing $500,000 from Charlton taxpayers. She has been released on her own recognizance.
