The EU has sent out an invitation to “take part in the green public procurement/EU Ecolabel revision process for imaging equipment”, including a questionnaire, starting by stating that “as you might be aware, the EU Ecolabel promotes the production and consumption of products with a reduced environmental impact along the life cycle and is awarded only to the best (environmentally) performing products in the market”.
The “initial questionnaire” meanwhile is “aimed at gathering the preliminary input about the current criteria”, with participation “greatly appreciated and valued”, and is available to fill in online here, with a closing date of Monday 27 March. One of the questions in turn appears to suggest that the EU is to investigate the possibility of adding the ecolabel to cartridges, stating ‘Do you consider that the scope should be modified to include ink and toner cartridges or other consumables?’
It adds that “similarly, Green Public Procurement provides criteria for the use by the public authorities seeking to procure environmentally friendly goods and services”. Those “identified as a potential interested stakeholder” in the “forthcoming revision process” for both the green public procurement and Ecolabel have been contacted to take part, with the revision process documents respectively available to view here and here.
The study will “inform the revision process” and will be “carried out” by the Joint Research Centre’s Directorate B – Growth and Innovation”, on behalf of the EC’s Directorate General for the Environment, while both criteria will be based on previous legislation. They will also be “defined on the basis of the environmental information derived from life cycle assessment and product-oriented environmental performance assessment studies”.
The EU believes that during the “wide consultation”, discussions with “experts and stakeholders of manufacturers, supply chain industry, consumer organisations and NGOs is foreseen”, and it is “looking to encourage active participation”, with those interested asked to register by filling in this form and sending it to JRC-B5-IMAGING-EQUIPMENT@ec.europa.eu.
