I can’t help it, I like trade shows. My first was in Dusseldorf, and I get a buzz (and sore feet) from every event that I do. Young or old, from near and far the trade show is a mini United Nations, where office imaging is the glue that brings everyone together – and long may it continue.
For us at The Recycler, Remanexpo at Paperworld 2017 was probably our best show in four or five years. I know you would expect me to say that, but it is true. We had more visitors to our booth, we sold more subscriptions for the magazine, sold some advertising and talked with so many people about the show and the industry, many of them new to the industry and or new to the show.
What did we do that was so different? Nothing really – we worked hard before the event making appointments, we worked hard during the show to connect with as many appointments as possible (but not everyone), and we have worked hard after the show following up on everything. The end result is that we have 73 new customers, and 600-plus people signed up to our news service.
I am not the only one – I have a nemesis who exhibits every year, but at the beginning of January he told me, in very clear terms, that the show would be his last. While I think you should deal with adversity head-on, I did leave it until late on Tuesday to talk to him expecting the worst. He smiled, gave me a bottle of very nice wine and said the show had been great for him.
A big thank you to all of our speakers who really help make the event as diverse and informative as possible, and interestingly a lot of market data was shared this year by our speakers as well as a big emphasis on how the workplace audience is changing, and how social media plays a big part in how millennials are engaged.
Congratulations to our awards winners, thanks to Messe Frankfurt for the reception, and thanks to everyone that voted – it was a great event, and over 43,000 votes were cast, which swallowed a lot of bandwidth on our website! But every vote counted, and the voting was full on right up until the end.
But you know the best buzz at the show, better than fine wine or drugs, is when somebody you don’t know comes on your booth, tells you they like your magazine and website, and asks a couple of questions, and you are able to introduce them to a couple of exhibitors – and after the show, you get a nice ‘thank you’ email.
Talking of websites, we have rolled out our new, more responsive website – it is very much a work-in-progress (aren’t they all), but as over 25 percent of our audience now access the website using mobile devices, you should have a better experience.
