The OEM is once again the top Japanese company in the US patent rankings.
In a press release, Canon announced that for the 12th year running it is the top Japanese company in the US ranking list for patents registered. The company had 3,665 patents in 2016 as opposed to 1,829 in 2005, according to the “preliminary patent results issued by the IFI”. The OEM said that it “actively promotes the globalisation of it business and places great value on obtaining patents”, and that it is careful to stick to the “patent-filing strategy” following the rules in each country and region.
It also noted that it is careful to consider the business plans and product and technology developments in each location, particularly in the US. The company said that it prioritises technology, and that research and development results “actively promotes the acquisition of patent rights” in accordance with the company’s direction, and makes “thorough pre-application searches to raise the quality” of them.
It concluded by noting that “through close cooperation between Canon’s technology and intellectual property divisions, the Company aims to improve its technological capabilities while further enhancing its intellectual property rights”.
