Canon announced that it has ranked first of all Japanese companies for patents awarded in the USA in 2014, the 10th consecutive year that it has done so. The rankings were issued by IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, which also reported that Canon was third overall for the number of US patents awarded last year as well.
The OEM was also ranked third overall for the past three years, and was granted 4,055 patents in 2014, an increase on the 3,817 awarded in 2013, with the past 10 years seeing the OEM increase its number of patents granted from 1,828. Canon stated that it “actively promotes the globalisation of its business”, and “places great value on obtaining patents overseas” as part of a “patent-filing strategy that pursues patents in essential countries and regions” while considering the markets.
The US market, it adds, “represents a particularly important region in terms of business expansion and technology alliances”, with “many high-tech companies and [a] large market scale”. The OEM went on to note that it places a “high priority on technology”, and stated that “through close cooperation between Canon’s technology and intellectual property divisions, the company aims to improve its technological capabilities while further enhancing its intellectual property rights”.
