The company stated that it had been awarded the certifications in September, with ISO 9001:2015 “quality management-focused” and 14001:2015 “environmental management-focused”. The former is described on ISO’s website as setting “out the criteria for a quality management system”, and is the “only standard in the family that can be certified to (although this is not a requirement)”, and “can be used by any organisation, large or small, regardless of its field of activity”.
In turn, ISO’s description of the latter standard notes that it “sets out the criteria for an environmental management system”, and “does not state requirements for environmental performance, but maps out a framework that a company or organisation can follow to set up an effective environmental management system”.
It is also said to be the “most internationally-recognised standard for environmental management systems (EMS)”, and “provides a framework to help companies implement an EMS to optimise, control and monitor their environmental performance”. Changes to ISO 14001:2015 include “strategic environmental management, with special reference to context, adopting a risk-based approach and emphasis on leadership”.
ISO points out that the standard “has been updated to help organisations better integrate environmental thinking into corporate strategy”. BCMY commented that it “began operations from a small bedroom in 2002 with a Princes Trust Small Business grant”, and that it began “as a cartridge collection business supporting the charity sector” before growing to “be one of the foremost collectors, brokers and recyclers of ink and toner cartridges across Europe, with further expansion plans in the pipeline”.
The company’s Zero Waste recycling service, it states, “is unique to the industry and offers a ‘cradle to grave’ solution for ink and toner cartridge waste”. Managing Director and Founder Simon Gilchrist commented that ISO certification “is based on quality management principles including strong customer focus, motivation and implication of top management, the process approach, and continual improvement and review.
“The goal is to insure customers receive consistently high quality products and services. BCMY Ltd is committed to providing the highest quality cartridges and recycling services. Being ISO certified means our customers can have confidence that BCMY Ltd is committed to quality and outstanding customer service”.
He added that the “relevance of the ISO 9001 and 14001 across the supply chain” is that “cartridge remanufacturers who have achieved similar ISO standards and accreditations should be insistent that all of their suppliers have achieved similar if not higher standards as a pre-condition of doing business”.
Jeremy Gilchrist, Operations Director at BCMY, commented: “We are extremely proud of our team and their efforts to attain the ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certification. It means that quality is not just a concept, but a reality. Our policies and procedures document that, but our people show it in how they work – and particularly in how they engage with our customers. ISO 9001 certification reflects our commitment to quality and our commitment to our customers.”
