Over five million cartridges shredded under OEM recycling scheme.

Project Homecoming, a recycling scheme between Epson, Canon, Brother, Dell, HP and Lexmark, is set to expand into Thailand in 2012 following the successful launch of the scheme in Singapore in December 2011, reports The Nation.

Cartridge recycling bins will be placed in various locations, with each cartridge donated to Project Homecoming currently being sent to Epson Mizube’s plant near Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture, where cartridges are stripped off to produce pens, plastic boxes and flower pots. 5 million cartridges have been recycled thus far.

Motonori Okumura, COO, Imaging and Information Products Operations Division, Epson, commented: “The operating cost may be high but our achievement should not be calculated by financial gains.”

Project Homecoming partners are also donating ¥3 ($.039/€.03) to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) for every ink cartridge submitted to the project as of Q2 2010. Donations have reached ¥9.5 million ($123,577/€94,873).
