ETIRA fights patent-infringing newbuilds

July 23, 2012

European Toner and Inkjet Remanufacturers Association (ETIRA) publishes Guide to Clones.

ETIRA has warned European resellers and distributors of the risk of trading in newbuild cartridges, often from South East Asian countries, that infringe patents, stating that it “could cost you dearly!”, and has published a Guide to Clones to help companies identify unlawful cartridges.

The warning comes after a number of OEMs, including Samsung and HP took legal action against resellers and distributors in Europe that were stocking newbuild non-OEM cartridges that infringe on OEM patents earlier this year, with Samsung releasing a statement in March warning companies that they may be infringing on OEM patents.

ETIRA also mentions the raid on a counterfeiting workshop in Germany in July, where OEM labels were placed onto non-OEM cartridges.

The Guide to Clones identifies the different types of cartridges present in the European marketplace, and warns resellers of the risks they may be facing. It is available in English, French and German, with Hungarian, Italian, Spanish versions along with other languages to be made available soon.
